Archival Research Workshop

On Monday, March 4th, Bob Kosovsky,  the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts for the New York Public Library's Music Division, will be offering a free workshop on archival research.  Bob, who received his PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center, has worked in the Music Division of the New York Public Library since the 1980s. He has processed the archives of John Cage, Sy Oliver, Heinrich Schenker, Bruno Walter, and many others, and has cataloged hundreds of rare scores.

Here's Bob's description of the workshop:

"Archival research has traditionally been a part of musicology and most fields involved with historical study.  But how do researchers learn how to use archival collections if they have not previously had experience with them?  How does one explore and examine an archival collection? What kinds of information can be learned from them?

This session will introduce attendees to using archival collections by providing background and context for working with them.  By understanding how they were created, used, and how to use them, researchers can widen their knowledge by using archival collections as part of their research."

It will take place in the "Reserve and Film Screening Room" on the third floor of the Library's Lincoln Center building.  The workshop will begin at 6 PM, but people may arrive any time after 5:30.  Everyone is welcome, and AMSGNY members who teach research techniques are urged to tell their students about it.
